HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVIE RAY

Stevie Ray would have been 52 today. I'll never forget the first time I heard a SRV record, it was 'Couldn't Stand the Weather' in 1984, and it was then that I realized that guitar playing, good guitar playing, was 98% emotion. Sure Stevie Ray had chops, he could shred, just listen to 'Scuttlebuttin', but what moved me was the spaces between the notes, the impossible bends, and the feel. Stevie had feel to burn. I was fortunate enough to have been able to see Stevie Ray play at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in 1989, just months before his tragic death.

It should have been Clapton's helicopter. Why couldn't it have been Clapton's helicopter?

Comments:
Uncool to be wishing death to EC...

I've got a SRV post I've been working on for a couple of weeks. I'll get it posted soon.

Hey man, I'll trade EC for SRV any day.

Some might say you're a EC Jihadist... Death to EC, Death to R&R, Death to America!!!

Some would be taking it a little far then. Think about it, by 89 EC had run his course, he's been skating for years, sure he can play, but what has he contributed to the lexicon since then? 'Tears In Heaven'? That crappy reworking of 'Layla'? Gimme a break, Stevie was just getting going man, he wasn't done yet.

All true... You know Stevie's near and dear to me too. Tell you what, get this record and if you think it blows, I'll get you two Rose Tattoo discs of your choosing...

BTW, I've got the two Rose Tattoo discs you recommended on their way to me as we speak. I betting that they're better than the two M Ward CD's I just horsed.

Stevie Ray was good, but honestly I had a difficult time taking his "blues" seriously. Like you do with Sting and his reggae flavored stuff. I'm a Howlin' Wolf & Muddy Waters type-guy.

Papa - nothing wrong with being a purist.

Tony - I'm sure that the Clapton tribute to Robert Johnson is full of well crafted, beautifully played blues, but the deal you offer won't work as I have all the Rose Tattoo worth owning (1st three lps) on both vinyl and CD.
