THE ELUSIVE VOL. 4

The mainstay of my vinyl collection, the focus, the beef, has always been seventies hard rock. I started collecting records in the seventies. My brother bought me Abbey Road, and it was off to the races. The next year I discovered Kiss, and thus began the fascination with guitar driven bands. In reviewing my collection, as far as the major seventies hard rock acts go, I have everything I want. Except Black Sabbath 'Vol. 4' in it's original cover. I have the vinyl disc, but it's stuffed into an old 'Master of Reality' cover. I need the complete package. Okay, so maybe I should have 'Coda' and 'In Through The Out Door' for the sake of posterity, or maybe to sample 'Fool In The Rain'. And yes there are a couple of Skynyrd records I don't have, so I got that to keep me going. But overall it's getting hard to come by a record from that era/genre that I don't have. Aerosmith, AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, Nazareth, Ted Nugent, the Scorpions, Judas Preist, Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Kiss, Van Halen, Cheap Trick, I got it covered. I even have a complete Journey and Styx collection. Oh Shit - ZZ Top; I don't think I have 'Rio Grande Mud', 'First Album', 'Deguello', or 'El Loco'. Ah, something to look for. I feel much better now, thank you for your time.

Comments:
with the exception of Styx and Journey (sans Gregg Rolie) you've just named 90% the soundtrack of my misspent youth. Just add Zep, Mott the Hoople, Foghat, Floyd, and Jeff Beck... and there you have it.

I'm sure I speak for many 39 year olds who had an older brother.

I'm going record shopping this week with a friend, If I find "Vol 4" it's yours...

on an unrelated note, your t-shirt is in the mail.

One AC/DC record I have (in the wrong jacket) is T.N.T (in Powerage jacket), an Australian release. I love the tracks on it and I want to find it on CD so I can put it on my iPod.

If Hue doesn't hook you up, I've a Vol. 4 copy (maybe even two) I can shoot over to you.

Oh Hue, I got the Mott, Floyd, and Beck covered as well, and I have some but not all Foghat. Really all one needs is the Foghat Live album.

I'll take Vol 4 any way I can get it.

Is this your way of "registering" for your birthday party?... Brilliant. Maybe Bleeker Bobs can set up a list for you.

You got all the Rush? and the Yes?

I hadn't thought of that Clarkie, but hey, why not?

Hue, not that I listen to any of the Styx records, those belong, with Journey, in the 'I bought it just to have it' group. Styx and Jorney records are dirt cheap at the used stores, usually $ .99.

I have all the Yes and Rush that I need, i.e. nothing after the zip code record by Yes, and Power Windows by Rush, but all the titles preceeding those records. Is Big Generator a better record than. say, Journey's 'Escape'? Is 'Roll The Bones' better than 'Grand Illusion'? Hmmmmm....

This might draw some fire here, but Roll The Bones is a great record.

Roll the bones huh?

I'm partial to "All the Worlds a Stage", "2112", and "closer to the heart".

up here in minnesota, young men are brought up on an equal diet of Hockey, Rush, and Mullet Haircuts (A.K.A. hockey hair). So ANY Rush is good Rush.

Take off eh...

Well, Roll the Bones certainly ain't no Moving Pictures, but I do like it too.

The first song, "Dreamline," really kicks ass. I'd like to have written a song like that.

The title track is great, but the rap is utterly horrible. Live, when they do it, Geddy goes to the bass pedals for the chorus and the sound just expands to twice its original size. It's really amazing.

"Big Generator" is the last Yes record I'll listen to; I think it's as good as the catalog number (not zip code!) record 90125. 9012Live (the solos), on the other hand, is utter crap.
